Art

We added our Flickr account on the right hand side of links. We try to capture photos from shows and there is still a ton of photos lying around to be uploaded. You can also find flyers from the old Head On nights there too. There will be other Safranin Design work up in the coming weeks..

But, that is just the teaser for the post. We really wanted to highlight a good friend of ours Arabella Proffer. The other mastermind behind Elephant Stone Records... Arabella also does wonderful paintings. We'll post a few here but you should go check out the rest on her website. We'd attempt to describe them, but I think this says it best:
"Her loose narrative themes and interests revolve around a fascination with punk fashion; aristocrats; Renaissance portraiture; Ian Schrager hotels; vapid socialites; Eastern European cultures and rock n’ roll lifestyles." Enjoy!

The Vera Violets

Safranin is very happy to announce the signing of The Vera Violets. We've known these guys from the start and even the pre-start when Jonathan was in Drone Dimension and came up and played some shows with Alcian.

The Vera Violets are working on a full length album right now due out this summer. Until we get some hot tracks to melt your ears, catch up with them below.

And Before the First Kiss

Sometimes a sound, a groove, a beat, a rhythm, a crank and grind... just comes running at you like a Japanese bullet train in a hurry and on fire. It just plunges at you, layer after layer, and sits in your ears and demands to be put on repeat for days and days. You begin to see life as a 1967 test pattern on a B&W TV set (through a haze of cheap cigarette smoke). This is the case with the track below, the lead song from a new EP by the band Screen Vinyl Image (who are J. Sequential and Electra Blue). The sound is a disturbed landscape, an alien-infested and acid-tinged one, that takes you straight (backwards or forwards?) to a moment where kraut-rock makes love to the world and everyone, by troika-endorsed law, can only communicate in signs and symbols and must possess at least three LPs, each, by Can and Suicide (playing them backwards, in week-to-week cycles, whilst wearing VU dark sunglasses, a dangerous attitude and a wicked pout). This is my music of choice. I'm simply blown away. In fact, it's the best sound I've heard since playing this album for the first of many times. Live shows are forthcoming, check the links below. Happy Revolution Day, comrades.

In a previous life I worked for a large Finnish corporation and was fortunate to have traveled to Finland numerous times. By far, the summer was the best time to visit there since a day never really ends during the months of July and August. It was hard though to get up and go to work everyday since the midnight sun made it difficult to sleep at night.

Memories of my time spent in Finland started to stir the other day when I received in the mail a copy of Screen Vinyl Image's The Midnight Sun EP. Obviously, the EP's title was the cue to those good repressed memories and listening to the title track sure didn't slow things down. The song starts with a syncopated beat and about the one minute mark a fuzzed out droning guitar comes into play with a complement of echoing vocals entering through the mix. Further in the song erupts in a distorted fuzzed out haze creating an image of the Finnish summer midnight sun creeping thru the window blinds.

Screen Vinyl Image are J. Sequential and Electra Blue and their debut EP will be out on April 3rd on the small DC label Safranin Sound & Design (a label created by members of Alcian Blue). The Midnight Sun EP is a heady blend of synths and echoed guitars that create a surreal ride through it's layers of sound. It's a futuristic, expansive sound and is one that reveals something new on every listen.
